Richard J. Kossler J.D., a member of the Transportation Lawyers Association, whose members represent the thousands of transportation companies throughout the United States and internationally, is currently on the legal advisory board for the American Movers and Storage Association (AMSA). AMSA has approximately 3,500 members worldwide and represents the entire spectrum of the domestic and international moving and storage industry. Mr. Kossler has served in the capacity of General Counsel for several multi-million dollar companies including but not exclusive of Global Van Lines, Bekins Moving and Storage, and BMS Holdings as well as advising and representing a substantial number individuals and other transportation companies.

As General Counsel or legal representative, Mr. Kossler’s experience includes, but is not exclusive of, the following areas:
Defending or prosecuting cargo claims, breach of contract claims, owner operators claims, collection cases, agency disputes, employment disputes, unlawful detainer actions and bodily injury cases throughout California
Overseeing the handling of hundreds of cargo claims, bodily and injury claims, and other litigation instituted against transportation clients pending throughout the United States

Representing companies in front of the labor board
Involved in the drafting of tariffs for the transportation company

Involved in the negotiations and drafting of agent contracts
Involved in the negotiations and drafting of real estate lease agreements involving substantial monthly lease fees
Reviewing lease terms, especially CAM charges and Real Property tax charges involved in the real estate lease agreements and putting caps on those fees
Establishing a reserve for each cargo claim and other claim against the company, when the company has a self-insured retention
Understanding Worker’s Compensation issues as well as Owner Accidental Insurance concerning Owner Operators and their workers, including interacting with the insurance carrier to insure representation in worker’s compensation cases
Overseeing multi-million dollars claims against the transportation companies involving wrongful death or substantial injury actions
Involved in the representation of companies that are in bankruptcy or dealing with companies that are in bankruptcy proceedings and interacting with bankruptcy attorneys during bankruptcy proceedings
Involved in the sale of a company assets under an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors used instead of a bankruptcy proceeding
Observing, overseeing or handling of all areas of law involving transportation
